Festive Favourites
The Grinch
Coming into the Christmas season, I thought it was only right to review one of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time; the Grinch. I don’t believe anyone is too old for this movie, and if you think you are, as we lurgan folk would say, catch yourself on, allow the inner child in you to shine through. One of the main selling points in this movie for me is the fact that it stars Jim Carrey as the Grinch. The role was made for him to bring to life, no other actor could create the same quirky and crazy characteristics to pull off this role perfectly. His humour, facial expressions and witty comebacks bring light throughout this movie.
The movie is set in a town called Whoville where all the residents live to celebrate Christmas. However, there is one who, who hates Christmas and all that it represents, and that is, of course, the Grinch. We follow him on his quest to destroy and steal Christmas after the unfair treatment he received from certain Who’s when he was a child. A little girl, Cindy Lou, takes pity on the Grinch and makes it her mission to get him included in all the Christmas cheer. It has a heart warming story line and paints the bigger image of what Christmas should mean. Filled with comedy and an insightful message this movie is bound to put a smile on your face, I guarantee it.
Christmas With The Kranks
This is another Christmas favourite of mine, maybe not quite as well known as the Grinch, but equally as funny. The Kranks are a family of three who celebrate Christmas each year with their neighbours, the family are used to following traditions and spending christmas together, but this year is different as their daughter has decided to head for Peru, the Kranks worry that Christmas won’t be the same without their daughter there. This is where the idea of skipping Christmas all together derives, and the Kranks decide to treat themselves to an all expense cruise trip. No matter how hard they try to get through the festive period whilst standing their ground with the whole crazy ‘no Christmas’ fiasco, this scheme isn’t well received by the rest of their street. The pressure is piled on high and they soon discover there is no escape from Christmas. This movie has twists and turns that will have you giggling into your cup of tea by the fire. The main roles are played by Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, both hilarious in their own way, bringing each character to life and making the movie extremely enjoyable to watch this Christmas.
Deck The Halls
This movie is another very aesthetically pleasing movie, filled with Christmas lights and snow. Steve Finch is known as “The Christmas Guy” a family man who takes the holiday’s to a whole new level with carolling, annual Christmas jumper photoshoots and decorating. He had everything in check until his new neighbor Buddy arrived with an outrageous plan of wanting to get his Christmas display seen from outer space. He did this by adding millions of lights, snowmen, santa statues and live animals to his house which soon draws a lot of attention and results in hundreds of visitors (much to Steve's distress). This causes tension between the two neighbours as Steve feels threatened and retaliates by trying to ruin Buddy’s masterpiece. A chill Christmas movie that doesn’t involve a lot of thought and really gets you in the spirits for the festive season.
