The Walking Dead
I have always been a fan of fantasy, action-styled movies and TV shows such as Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Teen Wolf. Something to bring some unknown, never experienced, excitement into our daily lives, where we are able to get lost in an alternative reality. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a good true crime documentary but something about it being true makes me feel uneasy. Whereas with fictional shows like this, it can be as intense as the writers want it to be which makes it so much more inviting - you can’t predict what will happen next and that’s the selling point in my opinion.
The Walking Dead is an intense drama which follows a group of survivors following the outbreak of deadly disease which results in a zombie apocalypse. The fortunate few travel on a perpetual search for shelter, safety, food and water. However, the constant threats of daily life become a lot more persistent and problematic as they face flesh eating, ‘walkers’ on a continuous cycle. This sends the group into a spiral of chaotic behaviours deriving from the strain of trying to survive. It soon becomes apparent to the viewers, as well as the characters, that the zombies are not the only fatal pressures thrust upon them, but also the lengths that fellow survivors will plunge to, to stay alive. This means that no one is safe at any time, not even around those who they think can be trusted as the innate desire for survival can be more deadly than the dead itself.
The show is extremely captivating and original, with continuous elements of surprise and destruction throughout. You become involved in so many other components of the show that don’t centre around the zombie aspect. There are meaningful relationships and there is heartbreak, some characters bring a certain amount of comedy to the show whilst others bring their character to life so masterfully that you find yourself falling in love with, or in contrast, hating them.
I will admit, before I watched the show I was slightly apprehensive about how they could create a gripping and compelling plot line about zombies that could be interesting enough to last 11 seasons. Any movies I have watched revolving around the undead have been an extreme let down from filmmakers on a low budget with tacky special effects and cringey scripts, but not this, The Walking Dead is the complete opposite, with extremely talented writers and a charming cast, the original idea of a TV show about zombies is shattered with this show revealing something so much more.
At the core of the show we get to observe how humanity interacts with one another when the world as they know it is falling down around them. How do complete strangers from all around the world form an alliance and join forces to achieve one important goal, survival? When the world they once knew crashes down what really matters any more? Love? Marriage? When money has no value and the job you once had is meaningless, how can anyone determine right from wrong. What once kept everyone in line has vanished and the life which was so familiar to everyone ceases to exist, they need to learn how to adjust, and do it quickly.
So if you want something to bring you excitement, intensity and some gory horror scenes coming up to the Halloween season then I suggest you give The Walking Dead a go.
