Modern Family

 

Modern Family is an American comedy show which is filmed in a mockumentary type style. This means the actors comedically look directly at the camera often and engage with the audience, as well as having an almost ‘interview’ like approach where the characters sit directly in front of the camera and speak to us (the viewers) directly. Another show that does this is the Office, which has a similar style and is another amazing comedy pick. Pulling off this style of comedy is an impressive accessory which adds superior quality to the show, not everyone could achieve as well as these particular actors. Personally, I think these actors were cast perfectly, which adds immensely to the comedy of the show, as not only do the actors do a phenomenal job at making us laugh through their witty lines but they can stunningly make us laugh just as hard through one facial expression, which I imagine is a lot more difficult to achieve.

The show follows the lives of three extremely and equally funny related families. The head of this family is Jay Pritchett, an entrepreneur, who is very tough and set in his ways, but deep down he is just a big softy who loves his family, and ultimately he is the tie that links all the families together. Jay is a divorced father of two who has a new young, hot-headed and undeniably gorgeous Latina wife, Gloria, who brings the beauty of the Columbian culture to the show. Gloria has a son from a previous marriage called Manny, an adorable young boy mature beyond his years, who drinks espressos and writes poetry. 

Jay has two children, Claire, a bossy but loving perfectionist, and Mitch, a cautious and witty environmental lawyer. 

Claire is married to Phil Dunphy, who in my opinion is the star of the show. He is an enthusiastic father, full of optimism and compassion. Without a second thought he will put the whole family's needs above his own, a hilarious man who is impossible not to fall in love with.

Claire and Phil have 3 children, Haley is their eldest, a glamorous rebel, who is determined to act beyond her years, a younger daughter Alex, who is smarter than the whole family put together and she knows it, and lastly, the youngest of the three, a mischievous son named Luke who loves inventing crazy things with his dad Phil. 

Mitch, (Claire’s brother and Jay’s son) is in a relationship with Cam, a flamboyant and lovable stay at home dad. Mitch and Cam both raise an adopted daughter from Vietnam, Lily. Who from the start is full of sarcastic and hilarious one liners. 

The show captivates the ups and downs of parenthood, marriage and family life. It’s a beautiful coming of age sitcom which highlights the realities every family experiences showing that no matter what your family dynamic entails, the love is still as strong and the imperfections are what can bring us together. It’s the best feel good show to put on at any moment with many inspirational messages throughout, it will have you smiling from the moment you hit play.
