The one that is 100% Friends

*Spoilers Included*

I decided to start my first official blog post with my all time favourite show - Friends. I'm sure most of you have heard of, or most likely watched, many episodes of Friends. That is, of course, unless you are in the minority who think the show is overrated, (in other words people who can't be trusted).

For me the show is top tier television, it doesn’t get much better than this. It centres around the lives of 6 friends who are all linked in different ways with completely different personalities, but who fit together perfectly. It is renowned as one of the most watched TV shows even to this day, with new viewers still discovering the show and falling in love with it nearly 20 years later. It’s the perfect show to cheer you up on a down day, something you can have playing in the background for some company or something to spend hours watching - just like the title of the show implies, it can be your best friend.

What makes friends such a successful watch is the connection you have with every single character, you become so invested in the relationships between each of them, when they laugh you laugh, if they are going through heartbreak you are right there crying along with them. Never have I cared about the happiness of fictional characters so much. They are all so different, allowing people from all over the world to connect with a certain character and find themselves within the things they say or do. The show is a magical mix of funny, quirky, impulsive, loving and sweet.

Favourite episode

This is a very difficult question to answer as so many episodes come to mind when thinking of this question, but the one that stands out to me as a whole is, ‘The one where no one's ready’.

Let’s set the scene a little bit with the story of this episode - Ross has invited the group to a black tie event at his work (the museum) however everyone is too occupied to get ready in time, much to Ross’ despair. Chandler and Joey are arguing over who gets to sit in which chair, which randomly but hilariously results in Joey doing lunges whilst wearing all of chandler's clothes with no underwear on! Phoebe’s dress is ruined after being hit by some flying humus, Monica is leaving an embarrassing message for her ex boyfriend Richard and Rachel won’t attend unless Ross drinks a glass of fat. This all seems ridiculous until you actually watch the episode unfold and appreciate all the weirdness that it is.

My favourite line from this episode is when Monica leaves a very non breezy (although bragging that it was indeed breezy) voicemail for Richard claiming, “It was a casual breezy message. It was breezy. Oh god, what if it wasn’t breezy?!”

Honourable episode mentions include,

  • The one where everyone finds out

  • The one with Unagi

  • The one with the rumour

  • The one with the Prom Video

  • The one where Ross is fine

Favourite friends moment

My favourite friend's moment is an easier question to answer. I have been routing for Ross and Rachel since episode one when Rachel arrives at Central Perk in her wedding dress and Ross falls in love with her all over again. This is why my Top Pick is their kiss from the prom video episode. It has the best mix of romance, happiness and laughs wrapped up in one moment. I could rewatch this moment over and over and still feel how I did the first time.

Favourite guest star

While there are many celebrity appearances throughout Friends, my personal favourite was the cameo of Brad Pitt in ‘The one with the rumour’. Brad does a brilliant portrayal of Ross’s high school friend who hates Rachel so much that he co-founded the ‘I hate Rachel Green Club’. The funny thing is, Brad Pitt was actually married to Jennifer Aniston at this time in real life.

Honourable guest star mentions

  • Paul Rudd

  • Cole Sprouse

  • Jenifer Coolidge

  • Reece Witherspoon

  • Christina Applegate

Rating of show

10/10

Final Notes

If I had to change one thing about friends it would be how long it takes for Ross and Rachel to end up together. I feel like they should have done this earlier so we could have had a few seasons watching their life together unfold. However, this doesn’t take away from the beauty of the show, which is why, if you haven’t already, I seriously encourage you to try it out, I promise you won't be disappointed!

Happy watching xo
